The national flag of Antigua and Barbuda is designed by a high school art teacher on a red base representing the energy of the people with an inverted pyramid shaped emblem of three colors in the middle. The apex of the inverted pyramid is white, the middle is blue and the base is black. In the black area there is a half yellow sun symbol representing the new era. The blue color symbolizes hope where as the black represents African ancestry of the people. The current flag was adopted on February 27, 1967 after it became a self governing country. It gained complete independence from Britain in 1981.
