Banned during WW II the Austrian flag was adopted in 1918. The flag comprises of three equal bands of red, white and red arranged horizontally. The red and white patterns have been a collective emblem for Austria for more than eight hundred years making it one of the oldest ensigns in the world. The red and white pattern is symbolic of the bloodstained white coat worn by the Duke of Austria.
