The flag of Iran was officially adopted on July 29, 1980. It consists of three equal horizontal stripes of three different colours--green, white and red. The green colour represents Islam; white symbolizes peace, and red means courage. In the centre of the flag there is a symbol which symbolizes the five principles of Islam. The white stylized script repeated 22 times on the red and green stripe interprets the Islamic phrase Allahu Akbar. On the centre of the white stripe there is a sword which is representative of the country's strength.
