The Singapore flag was adopted on 3 December 1959. Two parallel bands of colours comprise the flag. The upper band is red while the underside strip is white. There is a white coloured crescent-shaped moon depicted on the left hand side of the red band of colour. Five stars, each with five tips are depicted to the right side of the moon. The colour of red stands for worldwide brotherhood and democracy. The colour white denotes purity and virtuousness. The crescent of moon signifies the young country of Singapore on its way of development and the five stars correspond to the Singapore's principles of democratic system, growth, justice and peace.
