The current Sri Lankan flag was adopted on 7 September 1978. It comprises with a yellow background. Two perpendicular green and orange strips with equal size are depicted on the left hand side. A rectangular segment tinged with crimson red is there on the right hand side, which incorporates a yellow vertical lion holding an upright weapon along with yellow coloured ‘Pipul’ leaves, one in every angle. The green and orange strips signify marginal Muslims as well as the minority Tamils of Sri Lanka. The Yellow and Pipul leaves are Buddhist pious emblems to show empathy, love and self-control. The golden lion is an early sign of the community whereas sword is a representation of power.
