The national flag of the United States of America consists of 13 equal horizontal stripes of red and white color alternating with each other such that the red is always at the top and bottom. The stripes represent the 13 original colonies that rebelled against the British Monarchy. There is a blue rectangular field in the canton bearing a small, white, five-pointed star for every state in the union. The fifty stars are arranged in nine offset horizontal rows of six stars (top and bottom) alternating with rows of five stars.
