After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 Uzbekistan was formed and the flag was officially adopted. It has three stripes blue, green and white with a crescent and twelve stars on the blue band. There are two thin lines of red bordering the central white strips which signify human resource of Uzbekistan. The blue part stands for water and the blue firmament whereas the white signifies peace. The new moon has dual meaning, one representing Islam and the other signifying the new birth of the nation. The 12 stars represents the twelve months of a year. The green part of the flag signifies lush green vegetation on the fertile lands.
