The Syrian Flag was adopted on May 29, 1980. It comprises of green, red, white and black colours. The green colour is considered to be the colour of the Fatimids, white is considered to be the colour of the Umayyads, black is considered to be the colour of Abbasids and red is considered to be the colour of the blood of martyrs. Also there are two small green five-pointed stars in a horizontal line centred in the white stripe. The two stars represent Egypt and Syria, the two participating nations in the United Arab Republic.
